Reiki is an elegant, simple healing art needing only some respect, two charged hands, a simple routine of hand positions, and a receiving body. Morris, first initiated into Reiki in 1981 and now director of the Reiki Center in Los Angeles, is also a certified alcohol and drug counselor who teaches stress management, guided visualization, and Feng Shui. Her book offers guidelines to Reiki practice and is full of practical information and advice a concerned mentor might pass along to a student; “Professional Ethics,” diagrams of hand positions, treatments for specific conditions, legal considerations, and creating a conductive treatment setting. Interesting also are Morris’ reports on studies that uphold the effectiveness of Reiki, and testimonials of miracle cures. Although some masters will initiate anyone as a Reiki master, Morris explains why her center offers true experiential apprenticeships. Those looking for shortcuts and diagrams of the secret symbols will have to look elsewhere. CW

What is Reiki? Joyce Morris has put together a very accessible workbook for those interested in this healing art. Reiki (pronounced RAY-KEY) is a healing energy, yet this term does not fully explain the nature of Reiki. Joyce’s enthusiasm and self confidence gently transform the reader into the student. Joyce provides for even the casual student the most clear and simple explanation of this healing practice available. This book reflects her “package”, how she sees Reiki fitting into a balanced, and harmonious life.

Reiki is based on a Master/Teacher relationship and on student initiations as the basis of learning. Joyce shares her own story of her introduction to what she thought was a stress reduction tool. The first half of the book gives a well-expressed account of the origins of Reiki. Joyce expertly aims to correct any misconceptions the reader may have regarding the energy of Reiki. Joyce explains that the ability to flow Reiki energy is not a conscious act, it is not acquired with the conscious mind. Reiki energy knows where it is needed and goes there. The workbook portion is filled with detailed illustrations of correct hand positions and classical treatment guidelines. This book is an excellent introduction to the healing forces of the universe and how we can utilize them for our well-being and that of others.

“Local BOOK CROP Bountiful in ‘96”
by Lorraine Lauzon and Linda Mattis

The author, who divides her time between Pittsfield and California, has been an advocate of Reiki for many years. She has not only practiced and taught the ancient art but has also written extensively about its benefits.  In this book, she presents information for Reiki teachers, practitioners and the general public. The information is not meant to replace professional medical care. Rather, it is a self-help book in many ways.  She details the history of Reiki, the methods of laying-on of hands, the proper attitude, the benefits of meditation, aura sketches, proper diet, and the over-all mental and physical healing that can take place when Reiki is properly administered. Drawings portray the essential Reiki hand positions, and 16 pages list physical ailments that can be eased or erased with the Reiki technique. Poetry and quotations of famous people are part of the text. The author notes, “Western culture is growing more aware of multiple approaches the spirituality, and Reiki is a perfect melding of East and West.”
